On October 17, around 550,000 people across France took part in large demonstrations to demand action on rising living costs and better schools.
This was the largest protest since students began blocking high schools in September. While many people marched peacefully, some violent groups looted shops and set vehicles on fire. In the central city of Limoges, rioters set fire to a 19th-century city hall, badly damaging the historic building. Police in Paris used tear gas and water cannons to control masked crowds throwing stones in public squares.
By the following day, about 2,400 people had been arrested across France.

🔎Pocket View
It is sad that protests that began with students expressing their concerns have turned into such large-scale riots. The right to protest is important, but looting and arson can never be justified. Some people believe that anti-government groups may have joined the protests and made the situation worse. It is heartbreaking that a historic city hall that survived both World Wars has now been lost in the violence. Why have protests aimed at solving people’s problems turned into destruction and violence? I hope the situation does not get any worse.
