The Japan Shogi Association announced a new rule proposal on May 20th.
Under the current system, female and amateur players must pass a difficult exam against professional players to become professionals themselves. The new proposal would allow players to join the professional ranks without taking the exam if they qualify for it three times. A top female player, Kana Fukuma, has already qualified twice, so the change could give her a great chance.
If association members approve the proposal in June, she could become the first woman in history to become a professional shogi player.
日本将棋連盟は5月20日、新しいルール案を発表しました。
現在の制度では、女性やアマチュアの棋士がプロになるためには、プロ棋士を相手にした難しい試験に合格しなければなりません。新しい案では、その試験の受験資格を3回得た場合、試験を受けなくてもプロ棋士になれるようになります。トップ女流棋士の福間香奈さんは、すでに2回資格を得ているため、この変更は大きなチャンスになる可能性があります。
もし6月に連盟の会員たちがこの案を承認すれば、彼女は歴史上初めての女性プロ棋士になるかもしれません。
