Scientists recently identified a new species of wild cat in the cloud forests of Bolivia. The small animal, named “Tilcayo” by local communities, is even smaller than an average house cat. Because of its unique fur patterns and small size, researchers became interested in the animal and conducted genetic tests. DNA analysis confirmed that this feline is a distinct species that separated from its relatives about 1.4 million years ago. This discovery is extremely rare, marking the first new living feline species formally described in more than a century.
科学者たちは最近、ボリビアの雲霧林で新しい種類の野生のネコを特定しました。
地元の人々から「ティルカヨ」と呼ばれているこの小さな動物は、普通の飼い猫よりもさらに小さいネコです。特徴的な毛の模様や小さな体が研究者の関心を集め、遺伝子検査が行われました。
DNAの分析によって、このネコ科動物は近縁種とは異なる独立した種であり、およそ140万年前に近縁種から分かれたことが確認されました。
